Providing neuroaffirming, autistic-led support for autistic children and their families in Brighton and Hove.
Mainstream school settings are hard for autistic children. The constant need to mask and manage the environment can lead to ovewhelm, decreased engagment and, for some, complete burnout.
In the right environment, autistic children’s formidable curiosity, love of fact finding and problem solving mean they are natural, instinctive and passionate learners. If they are supported to understand how they think and what they need, then this incredible potential can be unlocked.
‘Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.’
Aristotle
The Green Shoots Project is autistic-led support for autistic children which means that creating a rapport and forging trust through connection and shared understanding is at the heart of the work I do. As an autistic adult, I support autistic children to build self-awareness, understanding that they are part of a wide community of amazing autistic people and that the way they think and experience the world is an asset if they release themselves from the oppressive expectations of normativity from our society.
‘Given a rich environment, learning becomes like the air - it’s in and around us.’
Sandra Dodd
The Green Shoots Project offers bespoke alternative provision for primary and secondary children. I work with autistic children in their own homes, supporting their learning where they feel safe and supported to be themselves, free from judgment. I provide resources that stimulate and inspire, specific to the interests of the individuals I work with.
‘I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.’
Albert Einstein
The Green Shoot Project approach is to work directly with autistic children’s unique skills and passionate interests. The role of the teacher is as a collaborator and guide, directing children along pathways of curiosity that the children have decided upon and are invested in to ensure learning is joyful and free from any of the negative connotations of ‘school work’.
Email and I can set up a Google Meet with you to discuss how I might be able to help.
